Tammy Lin, a medical student at the Temple University School of Medicine, who grew up in Fairfax; and Sam Farber, a researcher at ESPN, originally from Arlington’s Riverwood neighborhood. The couple live in Philadelphia and Plainville, Conn., respectively, while she finishes school.

Dinner at Foster’s Market in Durham.
The proposal
Sam planned a scavenger hunt through Durham that led Tammy to the Duke University Chapel, where he was waiting to propose.
