Ninety percent of American restaurants have 50 or fewer employees and most are family-owned, according to the National Restaurant Association. With the coronavirus pandemic now redefining every facet of everyday life, local restaurants have been forced to adapt to rapidly changing health and safety recommendations.
Though county officials in Virginia cannot, by law, mandate that restaurants close (only the state can do that), the Arlington County Board on March 16 issued a strongly worded advisory urging area restaurants to shut down their dining rooms in adherence with the CDC’s current guidelines for social distancing. (Update: Governor Ralph Northam on March 30 issued an official stay-at-home order that effectively shuttered restaurants’ in-dining operations.)
The good news is that you can still enjoy food prepared by your favorite chefs and kitchens. (Keep in mind that restaurants are already accustomed to routine health and safety inspections, and virtually all have stepped up their sanitary procedures further in the current climate; their survival depends on it.)
Below is a running list of restaurants, wine shops, breweries and food retailers in our area that are offering food and drink for pick-up or delivery. This list will be updated regularly as new information comes in.Â
Similar lists have been compiled by Arlington Economic Development and Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington. You can also support many of your favorite dining spots (including those that are temporarily closed) by visiting their websites and purchasing gift cards for future use. Every little bit of cash flow helps.
To support displaced restaurant workers and their families, considering making a donation to Hook Hall Helps. Scores of restaurants have also created employee support funds to provide critical interim assistance to their staffs.
