Kate Hougen of Mira Jean Designs turns memories into textiles. “One of the first designs I ever printed was inspired by my children’s artwork,” says the Glencarlyn-based designer. But for this lover of the outdoors, inspiration is often found in nature: Gulf Coast waves, fallen leaves, Caribbean-colored mosaics. Hougen prints her original watercolors on organic cotton and linen fabrics that can be used for everything from upholstery to window treatments.
Hougen can also create custom prints from artwork you provide and custom-match color samples and paint chips. She can even preserve a bridal bouquet as a printed pillow—“so much prettier than dried flowers,” she offers.
Having a hard time breaking out of that “greige” rut, but aren’t ready for a wholesale home makeover? Hougen can help you brighten up your interior décor with a few strategic pops of color, starting at $75 for an hourlong in-home consultation. Mira Jean pillows, poufs and throws can be purchased directly online. Textiles (and, coming soon, wallpaper) are available through designers and trade partners like Red Barn Mercantile in Alexandria. www.mirajeandesigns.com
