For design continuity, the cool palette of blues, greens, creams and grays forms a recurring thread throughout the house. “Color is consistent in the home, but each space has its own personality,” Miller explains. In what was previously a formal living room (now a sophisticated but comfy family room), she freshened up a twin set of built-ins from the ’40s (part of the original house) with glossy gray paint and a lining of textured chevron wallpaper. A wide sectional sofa is perfect for family movie nights, while also suitable for entertaining guests.

In the master bedroom, gray walls are offset by an upholstered headboard. An adjacent seating area with his-and-her armchairs layers classic and contemporary elements such as Greek key-patterned throw pillows and a cowhide rug.

“We love it,” Buksbaum says. “It looks like a totally different house.” Next up: the master bathroom suite and the formal dining room, which the family plans to tackle in another round of renovations.
