Fried-chicken-and-savory-doughnut sandwiches with sausage gravy. Crème brulée doughnuts topped with crackling caramel and oozing with luscious vanilla custard. These are reason enough to hit up the Falls Church outpost of Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken, but there is an even more compelling one: the fried chicken wings. Co-owners Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern almost caused a riot when they took the wings off the menu at their flagship Washington, D.C., store over a year ago. Happily, they reintroduced them in Falls Church (only) when football season started this year. The little wonders are dredged in flour; seasoned with salt, black pepper and cayenne; fried once and then fried again when you order them. That means they are ultra-crispy and coated just right. Try them tossed in a ginger-garlic hot sauce and rice-vinegar glaze, or in a glaze imbued with a generous slathering of zingy sriracha. They are also just fine plain. An order of six costs $9.50. astrodoughnuts.com
