Get Fired Up With 3 Fireplace Makeovers

Interior designer Andrea Houck turns three basic hearths into something special.

This young couple had just bought their first home (a newly built townhouse in Rosslyn) and wanted to add a bit more character to their basic gas fireplace. “They’re big fans of HGTV’s Fixer Upper and love the homey looks created by star Joanna Gaines,” Houck says. Taking cues from that aesthetic, “We installed shiplap paneling above the fireplace and re-did the surround in distressed bricks.”

The position of the hearth presented another challenge. “The fireplace is centered on a short wall, with awkward, narrow spaces on either side,” Houck explains. “We designed lighted built-ins with upper shelves and lower compartments to fill in those spaces.” The resulting display and storage cabinets form a frame around the fireplace and a flat-screen TV. Houck added custom window treatments and an area rug to make the space feel extra cozy—just the spot to sit by the fire on a cold winter night.
