Compost It

Arlington County wants your coffee grounds and food scraps.

If you enjoy a cup of coffee this fall, you could find yourself enjoying it again next spring, in the form of a flowering cherry tree. That’s the magic of composting. Arlington County recently started a pilot program in which county residents can drop off their coffee grounds, eggshells, expired produce and other food waste for community composting. The resulting product, nicknamed “Black Gold” by gardeners, will be used by the Arlington County Department of Parks & Recreation for landscaping projects. Food scraps can be dropped off on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Earth Products Recycling Yard near Shirlington, 4300 S. 29th St. environment.arlingtonva.us
