7 Ways to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Walks, runs and fashion shows raise funds to eradicate this disease that affects 1 in 8 U.S. women.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and nearly 300,000 U.S. women will be diagnosed with the disease this year—one in eight within their lifetime. Besides making a mammogram appointment (or reminding a loved one to do so) here are seven ways to join the fight and show your support.

Amazon Business Women’s Advocacy Circle Breast Cancer Awareness Virtual 5K

Oct. 1-31

Based at Amazon HQ2 in National Landing, this group is supporting a 5K run that participants can do anywhere, anytime this month. The group is also selling T-shirts and hoodies for $30.49-$42.49 to raise money for global breast cancer research studies and treatments.

Pink Carpet Event Charity Fashion Show

Oct. 7, 5-8 p.m.

Breast cancer survivors will strut their stuff at this seventh annual fashion show hosted by Pink Carpet Event, a nonprofit working to support and fund the fight against breast cancer. Ean Williams, founder of DC Fashion Week, will serve as emcee, and Miss Arlington Rosie Hartwell as a co-host. A dance party with a DJ immediately follows the show. ThirdLove Breast Cancer Fundraiser

Oct. 12, 5-8 p.m.

The bra and underwear store at Tysons Corner Center will donate 10% of proceeds to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a nonprofit offering support to fighters and survivors. Bloomie’s Mosaic Pink Pilates

Oct. 14, 9:30 a.m.

Paint Mosaic District’s Strawberry Park pink. Pilates instructors from the Tysons Solidcore boutique gym will lead a 50-minute workout. (Bonus: You keep the yoga mat and sliders.) Part of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program, this event raises money for research while celebrating survivors and remembering fighters. Alpha Breast Cancer Support Services 11th Annual 5k Run/ Walk

Oct. 21, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

In past years, proceeds from this event have supported the purchase of mammography devices to send to Ethiopia and Eritrea, in addition to giving financial support to local breast cancer patients who don’t have insurance by helping with groceries, bills and babysitters. Tickets range from $25 before Oct. 18 to $30 after that cutoff. Kids can attend for $15. // Barcroft Park, 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive, Arlington

Play for a Cause

Oct. 25, 6-8 p.m.

Get your bingo dauber ready to attend this event hosted by VHC Health and the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office.
