If You Feel Like Winging It

Catch one whiff of the charbroiler at Afghan Kabob House in Courthouse and you know your taste buds are in for a treat. Roasting skewers of cumin-and-clove-scented lamb and chicken fill the air with promise. The namesake kabobs are great, and the fact that the meat is organic and halal ensures superior quality and flavor, but I submit that the real stars of the menu—which count among its top-sellers—are the Zary Pary Wings of Angel.

Marinated for 24 hours in salt, pepper, red chili, fancy paprika and kiwi (for tenderizing), the jumbo wings are flame-broiled until smoky and slightly blistered. The result is juicy and habit-forming. Owner Akbar Madany, who likes to name menu items after family members, says his 7-year-old great-niece, Zary, a chicken wing devotee, garnered this top honor two years ago when the wings went on the menu. Zary means “jewel” in his native language and pary means “angel.”

Personally, I’d be content making a meal of just wings, which come with ranch dressing and a choice of additional sauces (mix the hot sauce and tzatziki together). But if you insist on having a more balanced repast, round out the offerings with some spinach-flecked basmati rice, spicy chickpeas and naan, which is made to order in a tandoori oven. An added inducement? The restaurant offers free express delivery within a five-mile radius. Your order is free if you don’t receive it within 30 minutes.
