5 Hairstyles That Say “Summer”

Local stylists and salon owners share their favorite looks of the season.

Rooftop cocktails and outdoor concerts are putting us in that summer headspace, but nothing does the job quite like a little seasonal refresher for your hair. If your dingy locks could use some TLC, a quick trip to the salon can have your mop feeling healthy, hydrated and totally re-invented. We asked a few local stylists and salon owners to share their favorite color and style trends for warmer months.

Balayage with Babylights

Melanie St. Clair, owner of Smitten Salon in Arlington (2209 N. Pershing Drive) suggests a bayalage with “babylights” to hit the reset button on your hair. The balayage technique involves hand-painting the hair while leaving out pieces of the natural root. Then the stylist uses a tiny brush or foil to add “babylights,” which frame the face with micro-highlights. The result, St. Clair says, “produces a natural hair color with soft highlights at the roots and brighter pieces through the ends.” To complete the look, try loose beach waves held with a dry texture spray.
