Founded in 1908, this small college is named after George Washington’s mother and is known for its high rate of student volunteerism. Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #16 among the Best Regional Universities in the South, it offers small classes (average class size is 19 students) an in-state tuition of $11,630 (out-of-state $26,220) and enrollment is 4,410. Applications among Arlington grads fell to 189 last year, compared with 216 the previous year.
