10 Local Apps to Make Your Life Easier

Looking for a job? A lost pet? A bike to borrow? Other new moms in the neighborhood? There’s an app for that.

PockitShip

So you ventured onto Craigslist and found the perfect couch. It’s black leather, in great condition, a total steal, and…oh yeah, it’s 8 feet long, meaning it won’t even come close to fitting in your 2-door sedan. If you find yourself in this situation, there’s no need to rent a U-Haul. PockitShip, released earlier this year, was developed for this very predicament—moving and delivering large items on short notice. Through the app, you can sign up for service 48 hours in advance or request same-day or next-day service for an added fee. Once you’ve selected your service date, added your items and special instructions, and plugged in a credit card number, the app connects you to licensed, DOT-compliant box-truck delivery drivers.  Local service is currently limited to the D.C. metro and Baltimore areas, a radius that’s plenty wide if you need assistance with estate-sale finds and short-distance moves.
